Who we are

Team Sweeney is comprised (mostly) of four people called Sweeney. The ‘old man’ (me) builds & rides the bikes;  elder son Jack sometimes rides too, whilst Chef Clare manages pretty much everything else. Younger son Liam works on the Marcos at Endurance Racing legends events.

We’re indebted to a small yet vital network of friends whose help is immeasurable – notably the legendary Guy Pearson of Exactweld.

Fabled two stroke tuner Ron Phillips of Fahron prepares the Suzuki cylinders.

On the car front, former apprentice David Moore is always ready to help, providing excellent engine component machining services.

It all started in 1966, which turned out to be a great year, particularly for the English. The best 250cc motorcycle in the world, the fabled Suzuki T20 Super 6, was available to buy in Great Britain; England somehow won the football World Cup (for the first and only time to-date); MYV66D, a 1966 Suzuki B100P was registered. It would become my first motorcycle, many years later.

What else? Oh yes, I was born 😊

1983 saw the arrival of our first Suzuki T250. It had previously been raced, then had been vaguely converted back to road-spec, presumably to sell. It cost me £145. It provided fun and frustration aplenty, along with a number of brushes with Her Majesty’s law enforcers.

While racing a succession of Yamaha TZ250s, I returned the Suzuki to the track, where it enabled me to win my first race. At the end of 1988 it was retired again, until being awoken once more in 2018. A bit of restoration, an engine rebuild and it made it’s return to the tracks in 2022. It’s been in use constantly since, Jack achieving his maiden win on it in the French Vintage Championship.

Alongside newer acquisitions, the Team Sweeney stable thus retains two of our bikes from back in the day, the dear old Suzuki T250R and a Yamaha FZR1000 Genesis. The old bikes are far from done yet..
